This is a free event organised & hosted by the South Australian Regional Network of the AES. Our seminar series provides an opportunity for you to meet with AES members and others in the evaluation community and to share and learn from the experiences of fellow evaluators.
This seminar will not be recorded. However, recordings of some seminars are available on our YouTube channel. Please subscribe to ensure you are notified when a new video is added.
The explosion of data coming from online sources presents enormous opportunities for researchers and evaluators to study many aspects of human behaviour at unprecedented scale. However, these datasets are fundamentally unstructured or semi-structured, and require extracting insights from complex data formats like text and images. This presents a challenge for data scientists, researchers and evaluators. So, how should the resulting models and analytics applied to large-scale online datasets be evaluated? What role is there for using these approaches to inform research and evaluation? This talk will focus on text-based data from online social media sources, describe some of the typical data science techniques used to gain insights, and discuss possible approaches used to understand when these techniques might provide options for evaluators and researchers.
About Lewis Mitchell
Lewis Mitchell is a Professor of Data Science in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide. His research focusses on studying online social media platforms and modelling how information flows over social networks. In 2022 he was a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS) and in 2018 was awarded a Young Tall Poppy Science Award by the Australian Institute of Policy & Science.
